Clinical Supervisor
Requirements for the CS Credential
Prerequisite:
The prerequisite for certification as a clinical supervisor is certification as an AODA or AAODA counselor at the IC&RC reciprocal level or an individual holding a specialty substance abuse credential in another professional discipline in the human services field at the master's level or higher.
Residency:
Must live or work 51% of the time within the Certification Board’s jurisdiction.
Experience:
10,000 hours of AODA counseling-specific work experience plus 4000 hours of AODA supervisor work experience (4000 hours may be included in the 10,000 hours and must include 200 hours of face-to-face supervision). An associate's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 1000 hours; a bachelor's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 2000 hours; a master's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 4000 hours. Transcripts must be official and sent in a sealed envelope.
Education:
30 hours of education specific to the first 5 IC&RC clinical supervision domains, with a minimum of 4 hours in each domain. The domains are (1) Counselor Development, (2) Professional & Ethical Standards, (3) Program Development & Quality Assurance, (4) Program Evaluation, (5) Administration, and (6) Treatment Knowledge.
Supervision Statement:
Applicant and applicant's supervisor must attest to the applicant's having at least 2 years of clinical supervisory work experience in the AODA field including a minimum of 200 contact hours of face-to-face supervision.
IC&RC provides the minimum standards for each reciprocal credential, but Member Boards may set higher standards for their credentials.
CS Application Appeals Process:
In the event that an individual's CS application is not approved by the Board, the Board will provide an oral and/or written explanation for their decision and offer suggestions for remediation. If the individual is not in agreement with the Board's decision and recommendations, then his/her concerns, questions, and/or complaints need to be sent to the Board, summarized in writing, with additional supporting documentation. The Board will respond as promptly as is possible and no later than a week after the next scheduled Board meeting.
Examination:
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Clinical Supervisor Examination.
Code of Ethics:
Applicants must sign a clinical supervisor-specific code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.

Recertification:
Six hours of continuing education specific to clinical supervision earned every two years. The 6 hours may be a part of the 40 hours obtained for the AODA recertification. All trainings must include a certificate or official, sealed transcript. Trainings must be approved by VADACB, NAADAC, VAPA or IC&RC member board. Unapproved trainings must include a syllabus and a copy of the presenter's resume.
