AAP Recertification

REQUIREMENTS FOR RECERTIFICATION

The period of validity for the AAP credential is two years.  The certification period is defined as the date the application is approved plus 2 calendar years.  No more than 20 hours may be carried over from the last year of the previous recertification period.  A letter indicating the number of carryover hours will be sent to the applicant and must be submitted with the next recertification application in order for the applicant to use those hours.  The Board will not assume the responsibility of tracking carryover hours.

Education/Training:
40 hours of education/training are required.  Education/training is defined as formal, structured instruction in the form of workshops, seminars, institutes, college/university credit courses and distance learning. Education/training must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the 12 core functions. Certificate(s) must accompany the application, and official sealed transcript(s) must be sent to document all higher education coursework. 

• 34 hours must be specific to substance abuse: co-occurring treatment skills, theories, practices; prevention skills, theories, practices; recovery skills, theories, practices; general counseling skills, theories, practices.
• 6 hours must be specific to professional ethics, theory and practice and include HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
• All hours may be accrued through distance learning, home study and on-line courses.
• 1 hour of in-service credit is allowed for every 3 hours of in-service training with a limit of 15 hours total.
• A 3-credit undergraduate course is the equivalent of 39 hours; a 3-credit graduate course is the equivalent of 45 hours.

Supervision:
Ongoing supervision is recommended and in some settings may be required by state contract.

Reminder: Supervision is a requirement of the ADC process.  Should the applicant be working toward that credential, then ongoing supervision is necessary.  Please refer to the ADC requirements.
